EVERYTHING WE NEEDED - The Story of Bath (Ontario)
EVERYTHING WE NEEDED - The Story of Bath (Ontario)
Bath in the early part of the twentieth century was a beautiful little village. Katherine Hale once wrote, "Bath is a daguerreotype village. It should be framed in crimson velvet ... There is nothing like it in Ontario, although it might easily exist in Mississippi or Alabama." The Main Street was unique with its two-story pillared verandahs. The fire in 1942, which wiped out one entire block, destroyed these picturesque verandahs, and they were never rebuilt. So Bath lost much of its individuality and charm.
All things must change, but the memory lingers. In this year of 1984, Bath celebrates the landing of the United Empire Loyalist founders two hundred years ago, as well as the incorporation of the village one hundred and twenty-five years ago. to mark the double anniversary a group of local residents formed the 'Bath Historical Recording Group', and urged families, friends and former residents to record their memories of past days in the village. Their stories are collected in this commemorative book. May it preserve in some small measure the picture of lie as it was in a quiet Ontario community, in a day when the pace was slower, expectations were simpler, and the villagers felt that within the bounds of their own neighbourhood they could find Everything we Needed.
